Nestled next to the Observatory on University Avenue in North Park, Geographie Shop features "well crafted, small batch, artisan made products for home, body and soul." This sweet shop offers an eclectic variety of goods ranging from jewelry to homeware.
Geographie Shop, with its plethora of unique finds, is reminiscent to me of something I learned about in college: the kunstkammer (or the 'Cabinet of Curiosities'). These spaces were collections of objects with no categorical boundaries--and today are seen as the earliest museums. While there are many differences between this unique shop in North Park and the original kunstkammers of the 16th century, the shop seems to mimic this early museum-esque style.
Geographie Shop features new and thrifted artworks and products from both local and regional makers. The objects are displayed throughout the store in a manner that recalls this 'cabinet of curiosity' concept--museum boxes are utilized to merchandise delicate jewelry and leather goods and mounted antlers line the walls. One of my favorite brands featured at Geographie Shop are the little creations by Botanical Project. Botanical Project creates delicate succulent and cacti gardens in unexpected vessels--ranging from clock radios to telephones to vintage beer cans. These curious art pieces take on a life of their own, growing from the lives of used and broken objects. Geographie Shop recently hosted their first workshop with Botanical Project--so be on the look out for another chance to join in!
Geographie Shop blurs the line between a collection and a shop, inspiring visitors with the space's creativity and uniqueness. Be sure to stop in and explore all that Geographie Shop has to offer.
