Named after the Atacama Desert that stretches across six hundred miles of northern Chile, Atacama Surf Shop features a unique selection of surf and skate brands. The name "Atacama" has deep implications and is an inspiration for the company as a whole. "[The Atacama Desert] rises from the coast of the Pacific Ocean to heights of over 20,000 feet in the Andes and is known as the driest place on earth. Some believe that this vast and inhospitable place is forsaken, that the desert cannot sustain life. And yet it does....The inhabitants of the Atacama have utilized new techniques to eke out an existence for many thousands of years. Just like our namesakes natives, Atacama Surf Shop strives to constantly reshape, redesign and reconstruct."
Now located in Little Italy, Atacama Surf Shop has had a long journey. The company originated in National City, and has been shaped by partnerships with Chris Christenson, Tyler Warren, and Jeff McCallum and SkenGKworks in National City.
The new space in Little Italy is uniquely merchandised and utilizes a variety of tools to do so--such as industrial carts and shelving. The layering of these elements instantly creates a more enjoyable shopping experience for the customer, encouraging him or her to explore the space. The back right of the store has a beautiful selection of hand-shaped boards--making Atacama Surf Shop the perfect place to pick out your next one.
Atacama features brands like Mollusk, Patagonia, RVCA, Pendleton and many more. Atacama Surf Shop also sells their own creatively designed tees, some of which were done in collaboration with local artist Shelby Ling. One of my favorites is this Atacama "Potted" Tee, featuring Ling's traditional watercolor-style greenery. This tee is a unique one to add your collection, and supports the San Diego arts community. Atacama Surf Shop not only provides clothing and accessories, but also all of the gear necessary for surfing and water sports. Atacama stocks a wide variety of fins, leg ropes and bags for your next adventure.
In a city (and a state) that is home to many surf shops, Atacama stands out. The environment is welcoming and warm, encouraging all visitors (surfers or not) to take the time to explore the product. The merchandise is creatively displayed and perfectly captures the California aesthetic.
